Adoption Events Happening Nationwide on Final Weekend of Clear the Shelters Campaign
September 6, 2024, New York – The month-long Clear the Shelters Campaign begins its final weekend on Saturday, September 7, 2024, with low and no-cost adoption events scheduled across the nation.
The well-known Clear the Shelters awareness and fundraising campaign began a decade ago in 2014. It started with a pet adoption event hosted by Dallas-Fort Worth based NBC 5/KXAS and Telemundo 39/KXTX and dozens of area shelters that resulted in the most adopted pets in one day for North Texas.
Over the following years, leading up to this landmark 10th Anniversary, the program has expanded to become a nationwide effort supporting the work of thousands of shelter and rescue organizations throughout the country
NBC Universal Local now coordinates activity across NBC and Telemundo stations nationwide to promote the important cause of reducing shelter overcrowding. Hill’s Pet Nutrition has joined as a major sponsor and Greater Good Charities now coordinates nationwide fundraising activities.
In 2023, a major milestone was reached as Clear the Shelters surpassed 1 million total adoptions since the program’s inception. It crossed the million mark amid last year’s month-long campaign, during which 157,000 shelter pets across the country found new homes.
“Surpassing the one millionth all-time adoption last year and now celebrating our 10th campaign are not just milestones, these numbers help quantify the incredible support Clear The Shelters has received from communities around the nation and the impact it’s had on vulnerable animals and the shelters that care for them,” said Meredith McGinn, NBCUniversal Local’s Executive Vice President of Diginets & Original Production
Hundreds of shelters in communities across the country will host low-cost and no-cost adoption events this weekend to mark Clear the Shelters’ 10th Anniversary.
