America’s Favorite Dog Names For 2024 Revealed

NEW YORK, Oct. 30, 2024 – Choosing the perfect name for a new puppy can feel as weighty as naming a child – after all, you’ll be calling it out in dog parks and vet offices for years to come. Now, the American Kennel Club’s latest rankings show which names are capturing pet parents’ hearts in 2024.

Luna continues its reign as the most popular name for female dogs, while Milo has bounded from fifth place to claim the top spot for males, unseating last year’s leader, Max, according to data released by the AKC on October 30.

“Dogs are an extraordinary and important part of our lives and choosing a pet’s name is a fun part of the process,” said AKC Executive Secretary, Gina DiNardo. “People put a great deal of thought into naming their dogs and often spend hours trying to pick the perfect name to fit their new pet.”

The rankings reflect more than just purebred preferences – they’re drawn from both the AKC’s purebred registry and its Canine Partners program, which welcomes mixed-breed dogs. This broader scope provides a more comprehensive view of naming trends across America’s dog population.

Several names made notable moves this year. Stella showed the most dramatic rise among female names, jumping from 20th place in 2023 to claim the sixth spot. Bailey, which ranked seventh for girls in 2023, dropped out of the top 10 entirely. For male dogs, Teddy climbed to third place, while both Rocky and Leo fell from the top rankings, making room for newcomers Toby and Tucker.

The enduring popularity of human names like Luna, Milo, and Bella suggests a continuing trend of treating pets as family members, while nature-inspired names like Willow and Bear maintain their appeal. Traditional pet names like Max and Daisy prove that some classics never go out of style.

Here are the complete male and female top 10 name lists for 2024:

AKC 2024 Top Dog Names

4 Lucy 4 Charlie
5 Willow 5 Cooper
6 Stella 6 Bear
7 Maggie 7 Toby

Whether you’re naming a purebred poodle or a mixed-breed rescue, these rankings offer a glimpse into current naming trends. But perhaps the most important factor remains what the AKC’s DiNardo suggests – finding that perfect name that fits your unique pet’s personality and your family’s style.
